Coiled tubing allows for the installation of long length tubes without the need for joining fittings. This reduces installation time and costs as well as eliminating potential leak points. PAC Stainless stocks both seamless (ASTM A269/A213, ASME SA213 average wall) and welded (ASTM A269/A249) tube coils to meet the needs of petrochemical, CNG, geothermal and flow measurement applications.

Coiled Tubing

A cost- and time-effective solution for well intervention operations employs coiled tubing. Instead of removing the tubing from the well, which is how workover rigs fix the problem, coiled tubing is inserted into the tubing against the pressure of the well and during production.

 

The coiled tubing is a continuous length of steel or composite tubing that is flexible enough to be wound on a large reel for transportation. The coiled tubing unit is composed of a reel with the coiled tubing, an injector, control console, power supply and well-control stack. The coiled tubing is injected into the existing production string, unwound from the reel and inserted into the well.

 

Coiled tubing is chosen over conventional straight tubing because conventional tubing has to be screwed together. Additionally, coiled tubing does not require a workover rig. Because coiled tubing is inserted into the well while production is ongoing, it is also a cost-effective choice and can be used on high-pressure wells.

 

Coiled Tubing Operations

All performed on a live well, there are a number of well intervention operations that can be achieved via coiled tubing. These include cleanout and perforating the wellbore, as well as retrieving and replacing damaged equipment.

 

Additionally, some advances in coiled tubing allow for real-time downhole measurements that can be used in logging operations and wellbore treatments. Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) processes, such as hydraulic and acid fracturing, can also be performed using coiled tubing. Furthermore, sand control and cementing operations can be performed via coiled tubing.

Production process

Coiled tubing is available in a range of different product forms depending on the customer requirements. We manufacture seam welded and redrawn, seamless tube products. The standard grades are 316L, alloy 825 and alloy 625. Other grades of stainless steel in duplex and superduplex and nickel alloy are available on request. Tubing can be supplied in the annealed or cold worked condition.

Dimensional range

• Diameter from 3.18mm (0.125’’) to 25.4mm (1.00’’) OD.

• Wall thickness from 0.51mm (0.020’’) to 3mm (0.118”).

• OD tolerance +/- 0.005’’ (0.13mm) and +/- 10% wall thickness. Other tolerances are available on request.

• Coil lengths up to 1500m (5,000ft) without orbital joints depending on product dimensions.

Redrawing process of welded tubes

Long lengths can be made by seam welding formed strip but such tubing has OD & ID discontinuity and may suffer from local problems of mechanical strength or corrosion. A welded & sunk tube improves these aspects and has been proven reliable in service over several decades for offshore applications. Although more expensive than welded only tubing, the welded and redrawn tube is still relatively inexpensive compared to seamless.

 

Seamless tubing has cross sectional uniformity however, it is the most expensive method of manufacture and has a limitation in the continuous length that can be produced between joints. For a slight premium over the welded & sunk price, tubing can be produced by the welded & floating plug drawn process which results in a product of similar appearance to seamless but with the significant advantage of much longer continuous lengths and greatly reduced costs.
